Why 4 Letters Are Only the Surface
Many casual personality test takers believe MBTI is simply four independent traits (Introvert vs Extravert, Intuitive vs Sensing, etc.). In reality, Carl Jung's original theory is based on 8 distinct cognitive functions.
Each personality type uses four of these functions in a hierarchical order known as the "cognitive stack": Dominant, Auxiliary, Tertiary, and Inferior.
The 8 Jungian Cognitive Functions
Perceiving Functions (How you absorb information):
• Extraverted Sensing (Se): Immersed in present sensory details and physical action.
• Introverted Sensing (Si): Storing and recalling detailed past experiences and established precedents.
• Extraverted Intuition (Ne): Generating divergent possibilities, brainstorming, and spotting external connections.
• Introverted Intuition (Ni): Synthesizing disparate clues into a single convergent future vision.
Judging Functions (How you evaluate and decide):
• Extraverted Thinking (Te): Organizing external systems, optimizing efficiency, and executing plans.
• Introverted Thinking (Ti): Analyzing underlying frameworks for internal consistency and logical accuracy.
• Extraverted Feeling (Fe): Maintaining group harmony, assessing social atmosphere, and community empathy.
• Introverted Feeling (Fi): Navigating deeply personal authentic values and moral resonance.
"Your Dominant function feels as natural as breathing; your Inferior function is often your greatest developmental challenge."
